Software Quality Assurance & Testing Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for software quality control experts, automation engineers, and software testers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I was recently asked this during a telephone interview with a company. I kind of fumbled and then went all quiet until the interviewer realised I couldn't answer the question.

This maybe because I am not too experienced in this field. So what are your views on big challenges faced by testers/qa

Hi @fdama - welcome to SQA! I sympathise with feeling stumped during an interview, but I'd suggest that this kind of interview question really just doesn't have a right answer. The interviewer is going to want to hear something that's obviously from you - even if it's fumbling - rather than something that's clearly somebody else's answer. It's more intended to get you to think aloud. It probably is easier to answer if you're more experienced - at least then you can talk about some challenges you've faced. I don't think it's a particularly good interview question though. – testerab Feb 14 '12 at 1:04

In fact, I don't think it's a question that's easy for SQA to answer either - that's why I've closed it (for the moment!). That's no reflection on you - consider it a reflection on your interviewer :). And please do stay and ask more questions here - that's one way to get more experienced! You might find the "interview" tag quite helpful to browse sqa.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/interview - there are quite a lot of really great, thoughtful answers in there. – testerab Feb 14 '12 at 1:09

I disagree about it being a bad interview question. It is asking for your opinion and is designed to draw out ppersonal experiences. If I asked that question and the person I was interviewing said "dev's because they are all incompetant" I would know straight away that this person would probably not fit into a close knit cross functional team. If they said "getting sys admins to provide environments" I would then ask them about thier experiences and how they had resolved issues they had previously. Its a great question to find discussion points and enable you to provide examples of initiative! – Ardesco Feb 14 '12 at 11:33
I also think this is a good interview question and I encountered it. It is very subjective (each person can answer based on his personal experience) but allows you to demonstrate whether you have real hands-on experience. – dzieciou Nov 4 '12 at 21:46
