Completed a first class Honours Degree in Computer Science back in 2002.

Been jumping between development and test since, and my niche is probably developing automated test frameworks and systems. But I enjoy venturing into the unknown and trying new things and have worked in a variety of domains, from network communication to air traffic control to gaming platforms.
Also love my travelling and photography, and am getting into writing.

presumably QA, with a typo. Ironically.

comment Occasional no response from Selenium Grid server - any theories?
@DanSnell we did some debugging and turns out that our version of java on the server is 32 bit. We've upgraded to 64-bit and the errors have reduced by 95%, but it's still happening occasionally :/

So your original statement works, but you're having trouble putting it into a loop?

I take it this is homework? Or is there a reason you need to test the yahoo login form?

comment How to test your tests without having the system under test?
@dzieciou - for 2 - no, I mean to your tests - to test your tests, as it were. For 3 - yeah, it's tricky, unfortunately, but it works for some. And at least it'll show a fail - you have to assume, at least initially that your test is correct once you've built it, and then you can investigate once a fail occurs. For 5, backend does make it a bit easier, especially with frequent code drops.

What field are you doing this in? web testing? network? application?

@Alan, I'm not, it was just that some tools allow for test-last approach. I'm trying to avoid leaving it to the end.

I realise this, but the business side of a company doesn't always tend to follow this. Often test follows after dev as you test something and write auto scripts / tools, but from a PM or BA side - "oh you're working on tests for project J? But we released that 3 months ago, you should be working on K now" - seems to trump continuing to automate for regression suites and mature test environments :/

Thanks. To be fair I've not done much r&p myself, I work with WebDriver/Grid most of the time for FE tests.

Why? Because each sprint stuff gets changed, as does requirements. But that's not something I can control. What is, however, is how to handle the automated tests.

I think I left out the key word - "gui". It changes on a daily build basis, with locations, names and layouts moving around.

I said "late test tools" - ie testing at the end. Sure there are many others, and we build our own (within frameworks). However, while automation is often below the gui, this is one where we're testing the gui.

Not much response, he just wanted a number :/

To clarify, it's an automated test. So it could be buggy. But it's hard to debug when there are so many bugs in the way. So there could well be a problem with the test that will be uncovered when some of the fixes are complete. The documented tests are written - I did a detailed test plan at the start and got them signed off.
