Are you saying you could have gotten the same knowledge by downloading the free Syallabus and then buying and reading the books in it?

So you are saying the benefit of getting a certification is to be able to understand other certified people? That doesn't seem very convincing. Wouldn't it just be easier to discuss things as a team? The second part of your statement doesn't make any sense.

Bruce, did you end up moving the website where your tools were opensourced? Looks like the link is no longer available.

Do you know how or why that specific company used JIRA? You might want to figure out if it was a good idea or not before trying it yourself.

comment Fail over testing Terminology
To reinfoce what Kate said my CEO used to refer to this as High Availability testing even though the fail-over was just one specific aspect of insuring high availability. The context depends on what's appropriate for the team.

comment Is my pay fair, just based on the fact I have little experience
If you are new to the testing field talking with a recruiter is a different experience but one you should definitely get some experience in. Finding a good recruiter is hard and requires simple trial and error. When dealing with a recruiter, understand their job and pay are dependent on placing you at a company. Some are pushy, some are understanding, some will only have a single company to place you at while others will be more patient about finding something good for you. Their understanding of pay scales will depend on the type of clients they have.

At least one of the papers @user246 is referring to is called "A Comprehensive Framework for testing graphical user Interfaces" found here: cs.virginia.edu/~soffa/research/dissertations/atif.thesis.pdf
