comment What's the difference between “testing” and “quality assurance”?
You are right that testing may prevent a build from going further but unless you are the manager / have lots of pull in your organization it isn't the tester who stops the release. More likely it's the build manager, release manager, etc. who says hold up. Therefore you don't have much control (it's an allusion). Just wait till it comes down between you and a developer and see how wins. =) Do tester think like customers or do they think like testers? There's a big difference. UAT and customers are supposed to act like customers (assuming you have either).

It's good to generate confidence in the build but how do you have that confidence? Do you look at your test cases and go "everything passed, so we're good. I'm done!"? That assurance isn't real because you have no clue how well your tests have covered the code or the quality. Besides most people don't know how to define quality.

comment How do I convince management that we need a formal QA department?
Maybe I missed this because I haven't seen your other posts but why do you feel you need a formal QA or more accurately a Testing Department?

comment how do i make the case to management for QA to get a new android for testing the mobile platform?
What is the purpose for testing on Android (i.e. what are you testing)? Do you have a native app? Are you testing for the mobile browser?

A random tangent: When it comes to titles you can pretty much call yourself whatever you want like QA Analyst or QC Analyst or Bug Bounty Hunter (my favorite). A fun game to play is telling someone who has no experience with software what your title is. See which one people understand better: Quality Assurance or Software Tester. =)

comment Any good references on Privacy Testing?
No requirement just interested in understanding more about the testing subject. Things to consider, etc.
