thanks for the clarification, I'd not heard of the term Edge Case before.

RE:I test these kinds of constraints by using the exact minimum and maximum value (to make sure they work), and a value a little bit less than the minimum or a little bit greater than the maximum (to make sure they are treated appropriately). Isn't this just good old fashioned Boundary Value Analysis?

comment Promoting Non-Functional Testing
To help others realise the value of your testing why not have your test environments match your production environment as closely as possible and invite "users" to come over and have a play with the system & new features?

lol - seems my translation engine is having a total misfire this week, Sam you were correct as that's exactly what we are attempting to do, sorry for any confusion I've caused.

The transition is from a "can do everything" test team to a "only do what you really should be doing" test team. Currently we don't use automation due to the diverse number of applications we support. Almost forgot, we will be staying together but may be working on multiple projects at the same time.

I'm not sure if you've misunderstood my original post or if I wasn't clear enough...but my team will not be moving towards a development team producing products with real customers. As a dedicated test team that delivers on a daily basis we are now being asked to look at the larger delivery lifecycle and see where can make a difference, especially upstream - hence the phrasing of my question. Additionally the nature of our environment and desktop estate means we cannot solely rely on using tools to deliver our testing.

comment How do I convince management that we need a formal QA department?
Is there any value in speaking directly with the plant managers and selling the idea to them? Also is it possible you could speak with the actual budget holders in your company and explain the benefits to them? Looking back at your original post could you pull some metrics out of the 2 week drop cycle you are working within and then massage those metrics to show how a dedicated QA team/department could be used to make the development even leaner, i.e. leave the developers and BA's enough time to concentrate on what they are supposed to be doing?
