@blunders, they do not need "understood the past" because some of them live in that past and wrote books having 20+ years testing experience. I always say, real-live experience is far more better than any book. However if you looking for testing theory, book is good start.

@PhilemonphilipKunjumon, yes you should categorize application into sections. I recommend use automated tests if it efficient (and possible) whatever it can adopt (system and/or regression). Some application possible cover mostly cases using only automated tests, but some application have very complex places and it much faster test manually then make research and write automated tests.
