Do your GUI elements have any other attributes that you can use to identify them? If the Windows IDs are changeable, there should be something else you can grab - field name or possibly a portion of the field name. You should be able to do that with QTP.

Could you give some more detail about what you're looking for here? As it stands the answer to your first question is "look at the screen" - the human eye is the most efficient method of telling when something looks different. For your second question, I suggest you work through (on paper) the process of setting the variables in the system - "Enter the system. Neither is set. I set var1 = true" and so on.
