If there a way with Python and Appium to detect that the text displayed for an element in an application has been truncated?

I found a reference to using ui_element.value_of_css_property("text-overflow") but when I try calling that I get an Appium WebDriverException about an unhandled endpoint:

selenium.common.exceptions.WebDriverException: Message: An unknown server-side error occurred
while processing the command. Original error: Unhandled endpoint:

-- http://localhost:8104/ with parameters { .. }
