General questions related to all aspects of the world wide web. For specific portions, use the specific tag for it, such as [uri], [websites], [html] and [http].

The World Wide Web (abbreviated as WWW or W3, and commonly known as "the Web") is a technology that connects various kind of systems with interlinked hypertext documents accessed using networking protocols.

The credit of inventing World Wide Web goes to many researchers, but It was Tim Berner-Lee also known as TimBL who not only proposed the idea of WWW but also gave his full contribution in development of 3 very significant technologies:

  1. Invention of URL (Uniform Resource Locator) and URI (Uniform Resource Identifier).
  2. The HyperText Markup Language (HTML)
  3. Designing of a Protocol for HTML - HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol)

The World Wide Web is an interconnected network which works as a bridge not only between two terminal ends (Web browser & Web server) but it also connects client machines to database servers with controlled access.

With a Web browser (client), one can view web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia, and navigate between them via hyperlinks, the default port for requests and responses via HTTP protocol is port 80.

A web server on other hand receives the client's requests and generates the proper response for it, like 404 Page Not Found or renders the web content on client machine.
